Bend nordic skier qualifies for Junior World Championships

Bend’s Jack Conde finished sixth overall at the U.S. Cross Country Ski National Championships in Houghton, Michigan, last week.

Conde’s placing earned him a spot on the U.S. Ski Team for the World Junior Championships, set for Whistler, British Columbia, Jan. 28-Feb. 4.

Conde, a sophomore at Montana State, skied for Bend Endurance Academy, Mt. Bachelor Sports Education Foundation and Summit High Nordic before moving on to college.

Conde posted one podium finish at the national championships on his way to sixth overall. His last race was the 10-kilometer classic, in which he crashed early on but worked his way back up to ninth place to earn a spot at the world championships.

The Junior World Championships will take place at Whistler Olympic Park, which was the venue for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. The championships include U20 competitions in cross-country skiing, ski jumping and nordic combined.
