Summit put an emphatic stamp on the Class 5A boys state tennis championships Saturday at the Babette Horenstein Tennis Center in Beaverton.

The top-seeded doubles team of Max Himstreet and Zack Olander cruised to a state championship, and top-seeded singles player Ben Bonetto rallied to claim his own state title, helping lead Summit to an overall team state championship.

It was the ninth team state title for Summit, which won with a total of 26 team points. Crescent Valley finished second with nine points and West Albany was third with 6.5 points.

“I am speechless,” said Summit boys tennis coach Jake Oelrich on Saturday evening. “It still has not hit me. We had six seniors qualify. We knew at the beginning of the season this group would be good, we didn’t know just how good, and how special it was going to be. I’m just proud of each guy.

“It was just incredible. Everyone outdid expectations, even my own. I had high expectations.”

Its the first state title for Summit boys tennis since 2018, when the Storm had won five consecutive 5A titles before making the jump to the Class 6A classification for 2019 to 2022.

Summit claimed a state championship in both singles and doubles for the third time in school history.

Himstreet and Olander defeated Storm teammates Aidan MacLennon and Otto Haar in the boys doubles final, 6-2, 6-3, in an all-Summit title match.

“The crazy part was the best match we had was against ourselves,” Oelrich said. “Those guys were dominant. They’ve played that match a hundred times in practice, right? They knew each other’s weaknesses. It was honestly some of the most high level tennis I have ever seen. It was incredible, really fun.”

Himstreet-Olander won in dominating fashion, losing just 10 games throughout their four matches of the two-day state tournament.

Summit accounted for three of the four doubles teams in the semifinals, as Himstreet-Olander beat teammates Noah Smith and Alex Lindsay, 6-1, 6-1, in their semifinal.

Bonetto stormed back after dropping the first set to win a three-set championship match over Milwaukie’s Aiden Yeung, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Bonetto needed three sets to advance to the championship match as well. In Saturday morning’s semifinals, Bonetto defeated West Albany’s Hayden Elliott, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.

“He doesn’t like playing the first set I guess,” Oelrich said with a laugh. “Both matches, those sets weren’t even very close. For him to fight back, and the energy of the team. There was so much support there. It was incredible, unbelievable.”

In the Class 5A girls state championships, the Ridgeview doubles team of Rachel Lester and Sydney Cassaro reached the championship match, but fell to Crescent Valley’s Anna Nguyen and Kiah Hollister, 6-2, 6-0.

Lester-Cassaro defeated Crescent Valley’s Haley Bland and Zoe Hughes in the semifinals, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5, to reach the championship match.

The Ridgeview girls finished tied for third with Silverton in the team standings with six points. Crescent Valley won the state team title with 26 points and La Salle Prep finished second (12.5). Summit finished fifth (4.5).
