Ringo Starr returns to Bend

Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band perform Saturday at Hayden Homes Amphitheater in Bend.

My appreciation of The Beatles and my admiration for Ringo Starr were both bolstered by a recent revisiting of “The Beatles: Get Back,” the eight-hour documentary series released back in late 2021.

It covers the making of the band’s 1970s album “Let It Be” and offers a fascinating look at the inner workings — the world-changing creative magic, the mind-numbing mundanity and many points in between — of the most important rock ‘n’ roll band ever.

I could probably fill the rest of this page with thoughts about the film, but only one of its subjects is playing a concert in Bend this week, so let’s focus on him: One of my main takeaways from “Get Back” was how absolutely essential drummer Starr was to The Beatles — musically, operationally and interpersonally. The man was a steadying presence for the band, both as a skilled and versatile timekeeper behind the drum kit and also as a thoughtful and even-keeled human surrounded by three exceptionally gifted songwriters, each with their own unique personality.

What is my point? Great question! I guess it’s that Starr is a singular figure in the history of pop music, not just for the music he helped make but also for the bridges he helped maintain and the band he helped keep together between 1962 and 1970. I’m not saying Starr extended The Beatles’ existence, but he famously joined the other three guys after they’d already churned through a few drummers. How might the course of history changed if he hadn’t?

Just something to think about if you see him Saturday night at Hayden Homes Amphitheater, where he’ll perform with his appropriately named All Starr Band, which features a bunch of rock stars in their own right: Steve Lukather, Colin Hay, Edgar Winter, Warren Ham, Hamish Stuart and Gregg Bissonette.
