Hobo Johnson

Hobo Johnson is a polarizing guy who makes polarizing music.

As a music critic who hangs out in music-critic circles online and pays attention to what other music critics are saying, I can tell you that many cannot stand Hobo Johnson’s brand of often earnest, sometimes silly, emo-tinged spoken word-hop and deadpan folk-rap.

Luckily, the world is not made up entirely of music critics, and there is no shortage of people who love Johnson and his music. Originally from Sacramento, California, he found a much wider audience in 2018 when his homemade video for “Peach Scone,” which he entered into NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest, racked up millions of views in just a few weeks. Since then, he has signed to a major label, left that major label, released a handful of albums and toured all over the place, playing for fans in cities far and wide.

To wit: The West Coast tour that will bring him to Bend’s Domino Room Sunday had sold out 14 of its 18 dates as of Wednesday morning. (The Bend date was not one of the sellouts.) In July and August, he’ll tour the Midwest and the East Coast, where 23 of the 28 dates are already sold out.

Hobo Johnson, with Bonelang: 9 p.m. Sunday, doors open 8 p.m., $25, Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave., Bend, midtownballroom.com.
