- The trail leads toward Broken Top from near the top of Tam McArthur Rim in 2018. Starting June 15, permits will be required to access trailheads in wilderness areas in the Cascades.
Starting on Thursday, June 15, Central Cascades wilderness permits will be required for all overnight stays in the Mount Jefferson, Mount Washington and Three Sisters wilderness areas.
The need for permits ends on Oct. 15.
Nineteen of the 79 trailheads within these areas will also require a permit for day trips and can be acquired through recreation.gov along with the overnight permits.
“These permits are in effect for really popular areas throughout Central Oregon that bring visitors from all over” said Jamie Olle, public affairs specialist for Deschutes National Forest. “They (the permits) are put in place to protect and preserve the wilderness and beauty in these areas.”
Reservations for day-use permits started Monday and can be obtained 10 days prior to a trip. Advanced registration for overnight permits starts Thursday and are available for reservation seven days before the start date of your trip.
Fees include $1 for each individual day-use permit and $6 per group for overnight permits. These fees are only refundable if the area is closed for visitor safety by the U.S. Forest Service.
Reserving a day permit, requires the name of the person making the reservation, the name of an alternate permit holder if applicable, an entry date, the entry trailhead and the group size — up to 12 individuals per group. Overnight permits also require the length of the trip. It is recommended that you include alternate trails in case the first choice is inaccessible or closed.
Hunters with elk or deer hunting tags from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and Pacific Crest Trail hikers with a long-distance permit from the Pacific Crest Trail Association do not need a Central Cascades wilderness permit.
Some trailhead openings in the Three Creek Lake area have been delayed until July 21 because of construction on Forest Road 16. These trails include Tam McArthur Rim, Park Meadow and Three Creek Meadow.
Due to the late-season snow, permits for some trailheads will not be available for reservation until the roads are drivable. Eight trailheads are also closed due to on-going wildfire rehabilitation closures: Pacific Crest Trail from Charlton Lake to Irish and Taylor, Taylor Burn/Helen Lake/Jack Pine, Pacific Crest Trail Irish and Taylor, Woodpecker, Whitewater, Crown Lake/Roaring Creek, Breitenbush Lake and Triangulation/Cheat Creel/South Breitenbush.
