Domino Room hosts Dogs in a Pile

- New Jersey jam band Dogs in a Pile play the Domino Room Friday.
Bend has been a fertile stop for touring jam bands for years, and so it sometimes feels like every one under the sun has played here at least once.
But here’s one that hasn’t, as far as I know: Dogs in a Pile, a quintet from The Land of Springsteen, aka Asbury Park, New Jersey.
There’s something different about these dudes, too. Their new album, “Bloom,” released earlier this year, reveals a band with the usual easygoing vibes and funk, jazz and reggae influences, but also a tight approach to composition, an irrepressible pop sensibility and echoes of the ’70s and ’80s in their production. Maybe they can explain it better than I can:
“The Dogs employ a unified approach to performance and songwriting, crafting aural mosaics through adept instrumentation and humble precocity,” says the band’s website. “As avid storytellers, they draw inspiration from personal experiences, balancing life’s foibles with ever-present youthful sanguinity.”
Yeah, there you go … that’s what I was trying to say, probably! The point is, Dogs in a Pile feel fresh and interesting, and as a bonus, you haven’t already seen them a half-dozen times.
Dogs in a Pile, with Watkins Glen: 9 p.m. Friday, doors open 8:30 p.m., $17 in advance, $20 at the door, Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave., Bend, midtownballroom.com.
