James R. Delp

1933 – 2023

James R. “Jim” Delp, M.D., a Bend ophthalmologist from 1971 to 1998, died June 12 at age 90. Born in 1933 on a Mennonite family farm near Lititz, Pennsylvania, Jim grew up as a farm boy. He earned a bachelor’s of science degree at Goshen College in Indiana, and in 1959 a medical degree at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Delp served as an Indian Health Service physician on the Hoopa Indian Reservation in northern California. Dr. Delp then specialized in ophthalmology in Portland, Oregon, from 1962 to 1966. There, he met and in 1964 married Dory, an elementary school teacher. The Delps moved to Bend, Oregon, in 1972 where he established his practice as the city’s second ophthalmologist. The couple joined the First United Methodist Church in Bend in which they were active for decades. Dr. Delp retired in 1998, remained in Bend, and with Dory enjoyed camping and other outdoor activities. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lisa Radford Compassionate Care Fund at Bend United Methodist Church or to your charity of choice.
