Cascades Tissue Group plans to close a second Oregon toilet paper factory in October, laying off another 72 workers.
Cascades Inc. announced in April that it would shutter a plant in Scappoose and close one of two production lines in St. Helens, eliminating 133 jobs altogether. The Canadian company said it was shifting the work to sites that performed better.
On Thursday, Cascades said it will close the remaining production line at the St. Helens plant, too, and lay off another 72 in October.
“Over the past few months, market conditions on the West Coast and a significant decline in demand in this region for brown recycled products specifically manufactured at the facility have compromised the long-term financial viability of the plant,” Cascades Tissue Group President Jean-David Tardif said in a press statement.
“Consequently, we made the decision to end the plant’s operations,” he said.
Cascades said the Oregon closures consolidate its operations “at core, geographically well-positioned sites that offer opportunities for future development.”
Oregon manufacturers have had a string of high-profile layoffs this year, from Intel cuts in Hillsboro to the closure of a hot-tub factory in Independence. Oregon’s jobless rate remains near a historic low at 3.5% but the state’s factories have shed more than 4,000 jobs in the last year.
