- Four snowy owlets are venturing out of their nest to explore the Oregon Zoo in Portland.
The Oregon Zoo in Portland has four baby snowy owls, but they won’t be there for long — not because they are going anywhere but because they grow up so fast.
“The biggest of the group is already hopping around and spreading its wings quite a bit,” said Jen Osburn Eliot, who oversees the zoo’s northwest area, in a press release sent out by the zoo. “We expect all four little ones to start making test flights over the next few weeks.”
Test flights?! Already? These little fluff balls, chicks of Rocky and Banff, just hatched in July!
But apparently, it doesn’t take long for snowy owlets to turn into snowy owls. According to the release, the owls should have all their adult feathers in a month or two.
“They’ll still look fluffier than their parents for a while,” Eliot said. “But they should have long feathers and be as large as adult snowy owls by the end of the summer.”
Visitors can find the snowy owl habitat near Black Bear Ridge. According to the zoo, Eliot suggests looking on the ground to catch a glimpse of the fluff babies.
