Sub-zero nighttime temperatures mean parkas are coming out of closets and winter recreation is underway. That includes ice skating — skaters will have a chance to lace up their skates this weekend at The Pavillion in Bend.

The Bend Park & Recreation District announced Friday that it will open The Pavilion to the public on Saturday for skating. The season is expected to run through early April, weather permitting.

The Pavillion will be open from pre-dawn until late night seven days a week, including open skate opportunities, hockey leagues and curling. Schedules can be found on the district’s website.

The first organized event of the season will be the upcoming Halloween stake on Tuesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Costumes are encouraged but not required. The $6 per person fee includes rental skates.

Discounts for season passes are available if purchased on or before Tuesday . Youth and adult hockey leagues through December are nearly full. However, a second session for ice skating programs (offered from January to March) will open for registration Dec. 4-6.

The Pavilion is located at 1001 SW Bradbury Way, Bend.
