Kate Clover brings gritty, retro punk rock to Bend

- Retro punk artist Kate Clover plays Volcanic Theatre Pub in Bend Monday.
Kate Clover doesn’t hide from her influences. In her official bio, the Los Angeles-based singer and songwriter wastes no time citing fellow L.A. punk acts like X, the Germs and The Gun Club as inspirations, as well as non-L.A. punk icons Patti Smith and Iggy Pop. “Clover mastered three chords and defected to art school,” the bio says, “where she learned to play ‘Chinese Rocks’ by Johnny Thunders, and wrote her first song.” (Editor’s note: Dee Dee Ramone at the very least cowrote “Chinese Rocks.”)
Hell yeah! In case it’s not perfect clear, Clover plays punk music, but not necessarily a modern style with hardcore grunts or emo wails or whatever. Clover’s brand of punk is a full-throated throwback, with treble-y guitar tones, unmistakable pop melodies, ’70s glam vibes, a healthy dose of retro cool, and hook after hook after hook after hook after hook after hook after hook. She’s like The Ramones if they’d gotten enough sunshine as kids.
In other words, she totally rules and she’s stopping in Bend on a chilly November Monday night before she goes to join up with The Hives to open the West Coast leg of their American tour. Let’s give her a nice, warm welcome!
Kate Clover: 8 p.m. Monday, doors open 7 p.m., $18, Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Drive, Bend, volcanictheatre.com.
