- AJ Lee and Blue Summit
Tucked in among the stadium-filling folk songs, raucous roots-rock acts and legendary country rambles that filled Redmond’s new FairWell Music Festival in July, an excellent bluegrass-ish band acquitted itself quite well on the event’s side stage Sunday evening.
They were (and are) called AJ Lee & Blue Summit, they’re from the Bay Area of California, and they are one of the best up-and-coming bluegrass-ish acts on the scene. Led by mandolinist and vocalist AJ Lee, the band is a highly enjoyable blend of top-shelf instrumental chops, artistic adventurousness and the group’s acoustic roots.
I put the “ish” on bluegrass before because Blue Summit generally plays without a banjo and instead has two members playing steel-stringed guitars. The result is a sound that feels familiar but also exciting, fresh and set apart from the genre’s usual suspects.
Catch ’em mid-next week at The Belfry in Sisters!
AJ Lee & Blue Summit: 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, doors open 7 p.m., $27.50, $15 for people 18 and younger, The Belfry, 302 E. Main Ave., Sisters, belfryevents.com.
