Redmond Fire & Rescue crews responded early Wednesday morning a structure fire in the 600 block of NE Shoshone Drive in Redmond.

According to Redmond Fire Marshal Tom Mooney, “crews arrived to find heavy fire at one residential structure with fire spreading to a second residential home” at about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday. Residents said they woke to the sound of their smoke alarms going off, allowing them to evacuate safely and call 911.

The occupants of both homes were uninjured.

Crews worked to knock down the fire, then began removing animals from the home. Mooney said crews rescued “numerous reptiles” from one residence, including a 6-foot boa constrictor, bearded dragon, and a variety of smaller lizards.

One cat died in the fire, said Mooney.

Investigators determined the fire was caused by an “improperly vented pellet stove.”

“The main house has some pretty significant damage,” said Mooney. “The roof collapsed in two parts of the house … and then the neighbor’s home, it has some pretty heavy fire damage on the one side. They lost some windows and a door and the siding is pretty burned.”

Redmond Fire & Rescue was assisted on scene by Bend Fire & Rescue and Redmond Police.
