A fire damaged an apartment building in southwest Bend on Thanksgiving.

According to Bend Fire & Rescue, crews were dispatched to Stillwater Crossing Apartments on SW Atwood Drive after multiple tenants called 911 because smoke alarms were going off and smoke could be seen from first-floor apartments. The complex is located west of U.S. Highway 97 near the intersection of China Hat Road/Ponderosa Street.

Five engines, a ladder truck, ambulance, command and a fire marshal responded. Crews determined no one was in the first-floor apartment when the fire started. No one was injured.

Crews said the fire was caused by the “failure of an electric skateboard” that was being charged in a bedroom. The fire’s spread was stopped by the apartment’s fire sprinkler system.

“The sprinkler head stopped a fire that would have easily spread to multiple other apartments and risked the lives of dozens of occupants,” according to Dan Derlacki, deputy fire marshal.

According to Bend Fire & Rescue, damage was limited to minor fire damage in a single bedroom and water damage to the ground-floor apartment.

Firefighters cleared the smoke from the building. After the sprinkler system was turned back on, all other tenants were allowed back into their apartments. The building has 36 apartments, ranging from one to three bedrooms.

SALEM — One person was dead in an officer-involved shooting outside Salem on Friday after police responded to a report of a male suspect firing a gun.

The shooting happened at about 11 a.m. Law enforcement from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Salem Police Department and the Oregon State Police responded and found the suspect; shots were fired by the officers, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured.

The Keizer Police Department and Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office are investigating in coordination with the Marion County District Attorney’s Office.
