- Wild wolf.
A molecular biologist will give a presentation about research involving wolves that may help dogs at the next Oregon State University-Cascades’ Science Pub on Dec. 12.
Bruce Seal will discuss how his research teams discovered that wild wolf bacteria may help prevent canine inflammatory bowel disease, which is currently both a chronic and untreatable illness.
The discovery could be part of finding a food additive or dietary supplement that helps lead a dog’s gut bacteria closer to that of wild wolves.
Seal has been a molecular biologist for more than 30 years. His research has mainly been with animal health programs through the U.S. Department of Agriculture and at a facility for avian viral diseases.
The research team included undergraduate biology students, who received Lyman Fellowship scholarships to assist in their research.
The event is scheduled for 5:30 to 7:15 p.m. in the Charles McGrath Family Atrium of Edward J. Ray Hall. It costs $22 to attend, and the fee includes a light dinner and no-host bar with beer, wine, soft drinks and cider. Dinner is at 5:30 p.m. and the presentation begins at 6 p.m. OSU-Cascades students can attend at no charge and employees at $10.
