Deschutes Public Library system will unveil the 2024 A Novel Idea selection at 6 p.m. Saturday in the Downtown Bend Public Library, 601 NW Wall St.

“This year’s program includes a youth title to accompany the 2024 adult selection,” according to Deschutes Public Library system’s Programs Supervisor Liz Goodrich. “We weren’t expecting to find two books that spoke to each other, but they really do in a beautiful way.”

The library will host programming related to its Novel Idea selections in the spring, culminating in an author visit.

The annual community reading event began in 2002 with the selection of David James Duncan’s “The River Why,” which garnered 400 participants; this year’s event saw 15,000 take part, according to Deschutes Public Library system. For more info, visit deschuteslibrary.org.

Earlier this week, the library also announced the writers who will appear in its 2024 Author! Author! series, a fundraiser for A Novel Idea: Anne Lamott, author of “Bird by Bird” and many other books Feb. 2; Stephanie Land (“Maid”) on March 1; and Robin Wall Kimmerer (“Braiding Sweetgrass”) May 16.
