’Tis the season for holiday events around Central Oregon, and here in the Listen section, we’re most interested in the ones that revolve around music.
And there are plenty! Here’s a roundup:
A fortnight of fun at the Tower Theatre
As it does every December, the Tower Theatre (835 NW Wall Street, Bend) will light up with a combination of orchestra and choir performances, pop concerts and other fun stuff. For more information on any of these, visit towertheatre.org.
• On Friday night, Emmy Award winner Tim Noah and opera singer Rachel DeShon present their “This Must Be Christmas!” show, featuring songs from Noah’s catalog, holiday favorites, storytelling, audience participation and more. 5:15 p.m., $29.95-$36.73.
• Central Oregon Mastersingers, a group of local vocal talent, will perform its annual holiday concert Saturday and Sunday night. The program includes a musical adaptation of “A Christmas Carol” with the choir providing carols and background music throughout. 7 p.m., $31-$41.
• On Wednesday, Dec. 13, the 35-member Central Oregon Youth Concert will perform its winter concert, led by Central Oregon Community College music professor Travis Allen and conducted by Redmond Proficiency Academy’s Jonathon Moore. 7 p.m., $16-$21.
• On Thursday, Dec. 14, it’s time for the annual concert from local acoustic guitar wizard Todd Haaby, who will celebrate the release of his new album “Bella Amore.” Expect fiery Latin sounds, nuevo flamenco music, Brazilian jazz, Spanish guitar and some holiday cheer, too. 7:30 p.m., SOLD OUT.
• On Friday, Dec. 15, Broadway Rocks Cancer features a star-studded group of Broadway actors performing a number of toe-tapping showtunes and holiday classics to benefit patients battling cancer and their families.
• Live music with vintage cartoons? Why not! Saturday, Dec. 16 brings The Queen’s Cartoonists’ “Holiday Hurrah” to the Tower stage, where they’ll perfectly synchronize soundtracks and sound effects to festive animated short films. 2 p.m., $26-$36.
• Love cellos? Who doesn’t? This is for you: The long-running Portland Cello Project ensemble will return to the Tower Sunday, Dec. 17 to deliver its first holiday show “Under the Mistletoe.” Joining them will be powerhouse R&B singer Saeeda Wright. 7:30 p.m., $26-$51.
• For three nights (Dec. 21-23, including one matinee) snuggled right up against the big day, Swingin’ Tower Christmas will take over the theater, featuring a 17-piece big band and local singers performing the most swingin’ Christmas tunes. 7 p.m., $36-$46.
A holiday dance party at Open Space
Here’s one for the high-energy holiday partiers: On Saturday, Dec. 16, Open Space Event Studios (220 NE Lafayette Ave., Bend) will host Jingle Ball: An EDM Holiday Party featuring five hours of beats-and-bass-driven electronic dance music by DJs eyeNeye, Giancarlo, LiamLantern, ROMZ, Schaab, Skora and Swell. There’ll also be a photo booth, crafts, a comfortable lounge area and more. 8 p.m., doors open 7 p.m., $12, openspace.studio.
Patrick Lamb’s ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas’
This monthly jazz concert series will get into the holiday spirit on Sunday, Dec. 17 and Monday, Dec. 18 as Portland-based saxophonist Patrick Lamb brings his popular “A Charlie Brown Christmas” show to life at the Oxford Hotel (10 NW Minnesota Ave., Bend).
If you’d like evidence of Lamb’s stature within the Portland jazz community, just look at the band that will join him for this one: Drummer Ron Steen, bassist Ed Bennett, guitarist Dan Balmer and pianist Steve Christofferson. Office Christmas Party at Volcanic Theatre
The night of Saturday, Dec. 23, is really your last chance to go out and dance before hunkering down with loved ones for a few days.
That’s when Volcanic Theatre Pub (70 SW Century Drive, Bend) and DJ Giancarlo are hosting an evening of dance music called the Office Christmas Party. The promised vibes, per the poster, include hip-hop, house music and more. 10 p.m., $5, volcanictheatre.com.
