The Sextones return to Silver Moon Brewing

The Sextones will step out of their Interdimensional Cool-Music Portal to play Silver Moon Brewing Saturday.

The Sextones sound like they chose their name not only to represent their particularly slinky and seductive brand of funk ‘n’ soul, but also to provoke giggles from those of us who are, let’s just say, children trapped in adults’ bodies.

But there is a more logical explanation here: The Reno, Nevada-based band’s frontman and guitarist is named Mark Sexton and Christopher Sexton plays the piano. Alexander Korostinsky plays bass and drummer Daniel Weiss rounds out the lineup.

See? Sexton plus tones, as in musical tones, equals The Sextones, a name that works on multiple levels, both crude and perfectly reasonable. Suitable, even, because these cats are capable of some seriously taut and alluring funk and soul that sounds not like a knock-off of the good stuff from the 1960s and ’70s, but like it is actually from that era and was imported into the present via some kind of Interdimensional Cool-Music Portal.

Friends since childhood, The Sextones will come to Bend Saturday night as part of a tour promoting their excellent new album “Love Can’t Be Borrowed,” which was produced by Kelly Finnigan of like-minded band (and longtime Bend faves) Monophonics.

The Sextones: 8 p.m. Saturday, doors open 7 p.m., $12, Silver Moon Brewing, 24 NW Greenwood Ave., Bend, silvermoonbrewing.com.
