Get a dose of scenic views at Bend’s Bessie Butte

The 1.4-mile trail up Bessie Butte is exposed, making the cooler months suitable for climbing to the top, when there’s no need for shade. But come December, other weather variables can get in the way of enjoying one of the butte’s best attributes: 360-degree views of the Cascades and surrounding High Desert buttes.

Last weekend, my family was eager for a dose of the outdoors close to home and without too many people. Both goals were accomplished with a visit to Bessie Butte, even though we didn’t make it to the top, which sits at 4,767 feet. On a clear day, the summit offers vistas of the Three Sisters, Broken Top and Mount Bachelor, according to Oregon Hikers.

A bone-chilling wind from the west prevented our success in logging the full hike and gaining a total of almost 500 feet in elevation.

Instead, mother nature treated us to a different surprise.

A rainbow appeared on the horizon during our descent. Its vibrant colors stretched up to meet the overhanging clouds, adding a magical quality to the landscape.

On the way down, the path proved slippery in several places and I was thankful to have worn my hiking boots. Even more, I wished I’d packed a pair of ice cleats for additional traction.

There’s no doubt I’ll be returning on a clear, cool day to fully enjoy the rewards awaiting at the top of Bessie Butte.
