Black bear cubs join the sleuth at the Oregon Zoo

It’s been a good month for babies at the Oregon Zoo. On Dec. 4, a baby black rhino was born. And now, two orphaned black bear cubs have joined the sleuth in Black Bear Ridge.

Important note: A “sleuth” is the name for a group of bears. Who knew? (A third grader somewhere is yelling, with their hand in the air, “Me! Me!”)

The new bears, Timber and Thorn, were found separately alone in Alaska and, since they were too young to survive by themselves, they were rescued and taken to the Alaska Zoo in Anchorage. Then, they were brought to Portland. Alaska Airlines covered the cost of transporting the bears from Alaska to Oregon.

The cubs, both males, are, of course, named after Portland’s two professional soccer teams. The zoo isn’t sure of their exact age, but said both were born last spring.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Timber and Thorn to Oregon,” said Travis Koons, who oversees the zoo’s Great Northwest area, in a press release. “They’ve been playing together and showing us their personalities already – Timber is a bit more adventurous even though Thorn is the bigger of the two.”

The new bears, who are currently in a cub-proof section of Black Bear Ridge, will eventually join the current inhabitants, Cubby, a male, and Dale, a female, in the habitat, which was remodeled earlier this year.

“Visitors may catch glimpses of the cubs now, but they don’t have access to all of Black Bear Ridge yet,” said Koons in the release. “Once Timber and Thorn are ready, they’ll be able to venture out into the larger habitat. I have a feeling that new climbing structure is going to get a lot of use.”
