- Demonstrators gather on the Burnside Bridge in Portland on Thursday, light a 12-foot menorah and demand an immediate cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war.
Hundreds of demonstrators blocked traffic Thursday afternoon during rush hour on the Burnside Bridge in Portland to demand an immediate cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war.
Portland’s chapter of Jewish Voices for Peace, a progressive anti-Zionist organization, planned the demonstration to coincide with the final night of Hanukkah and encouraged participants to dress all in black to signify mourning.
“Rise up, rise up,” Catherine Petru called into a megaphone while standing on the Burnside Bridge at about 3:15 p.m.
”Rise up, my people, rise up,” a group of about 50 protesters chanted back.
About 150 people had gathered on the bridge by 3:40 p.m. Demonstrators sang “cease-fire now,” “free Palestine” and “not in our name” while gathered around a 12-foot-tall menorah placed in the center of the road. The group sat on the bridge as a blessing was read.
The crowd grew to about 300 people by 4:30 p.m.
