FOOTBALL

Oregon State freshman quarterback Aidan Chiles completed his intent to transfer, making a verbal commitment Thursday to Michigan State. Chiles rejoins coach Jonathan Smith, who left Oregon State at regular season’s end to take over the Spartans. Chiles also reunites with offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren, who — like Smith — recently left OSU for Michigan State.

Chiles, who went in the transfer portal Dec. 4, was arguably the most exciting quarterback prospect in Oregon State history. A dual threat quarterback, Chiles was a 4-star recruit who played in nine games during the 2023 season.

Chiles completed 24 of 35 passes for 309 yards and four touchdowns. Chiles also ran for 79 yards and three scores. Chiles visited Michigan State last weekend, and committed to MSU four days after leaving the East Lansing, Michigan campus.

BASKETBALL

Two-time ABA champion and three-time NBA All-Star George McGinnis has died. He was 73. McGinnis was considered one of the best prep players to play in the basketball-rich state of Indiana. He spent two seasons with the Indiana Hoosiers, earning third-team All-American honors in the only season he actually played.

McGinnis then became one of the first underclassmen to play professional basketball, joining the Indiana Pacers in 1971. He also played for the Philadelphia 76ers and Denver Nuggets before finishing his 11-year career back with the Pacers. He was the ABA’s 1974-75 MVP and a three-time ABA All-Star.
