Oregon State running back Damien Martinez unlikely to play in Sun Bowl due to lack of practice

Oregon State running back Damien Martinez will not play in the Sun Bowl on Dec. 29 after Beavers coach Trent Bray released a statement Monday afternoon.

Martinez was suspended on Nov. 30 after he was arrested following a traffic stop by Corvallis police for suspicion of DUII. Martinez was reinstated last Friday when Benton County District Attorney’s office declined to file the DUII charge.

There was some confusion following Monday’s practice when interim coach Kefense Hynson said Martinez was unlikely to play as he hadn’t been practicing with the team. Before the suspension was lifted, Martinez had gone home to Lewisville, Texas. Bray is not coaching in the game as he’s putting together a staff and building for next year’s team as he took over the program after coach Jonathan Smith left Nov. 25 for Michigan State.

“Damien returned home to Texas with the understanding that he would not be able to play in the Sun Bowl. To change course at this time is not in the best interest for him or his teammates, as our team prepares for the bowl game and Damien continues his hard work for continued success in future years at Oregon State,” Bray said in a statement.

Martinez rushed for 1,185 yards this season and earned first team all-Pac-12 honors for a second consecutive year. With Martinez out, Deshaun Fenwick is expected to start for Oregon State against Notre Dame when the teams play at 11 a.m. Dec. 29 at Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso, Texas.

Hynson, speaking after the Beavers’ practice earlier Monday, said it was unlikely Martinez would rejoin the Beavers.

“I would tell you as I stand here today, he won’t play,” Hynson said. “But that’s based on how I feel based on me, what you’ve got to do to get ready for a football game. It would be a quick turnaround, and personally, I don’t think it’s worth it.”

Bray later made it clear in his statement that Martinez would not play.
