Oregon doesn’t need to import every idea from Europe. We know some people love Europe’s health care, bicycle-friendly streets, rail system and even experiments with universal basic income.
And with Measure 110, we imported an idea from Portugal: a different approach to illegal drugs. Small amounts of possession were decriminalized in Oregon. Just putting people in jail for illegal drug use isn’t much of a solution for illegal drug use. Still Measure 110 had flaws.
The Oregonian’s Noelle Crombie went to Portugal to examine policies there. And in Portugal and other countries in Europe, there are places where people can use heroin and crack under the watchful eye of social workers.
It arguably helps keep some people alive. And that is undeniably a good thing.
The idea, though, of a more permissive society that allows drug use in this way, well, we can’t speak for all Oregonians, but we don’t want it.
