Dance the week away at Volcanic Theatre Pub

Published 3:15 pm Wednesday, December 20, 2023

There are a number of good reasons to go out dancing during the final couple weeks of the year.

Cabin fever setting in? Get out of the house and get down!

Close proximity to family wearing thin? Shake your rump to forget about ‘em for a bit!

Ate too much honey-baked ham or too many Christmas cookies (or both)? Cut a rug to work off the calories!

You can find plenty of places to dance this week in Central Oregon, or you could just set up camp near Volcanic Theatre Pub (70 SW Century Drive, Bend), where three nights of electronic dance music are planned over the next seven days. Here’s the scoop:

Kendoll

On Friday night, VTP will host DJ Kendoll, who is originally from Seattle but is now based in Los Angeles. (Her father is former Seattle Seahawks linebacker Dave Wyman.) She has played high-profile gigs at EDC Las Vegas and Beyond Wonderland, and it’s easy to hear why: Her bass-heavy, relentlessly upbeat approach to house music results in fun songs that sound alien like transmissions from a far-off, rhythm-centric universe.

She’ll perform Friday, with support from Everettz, Soft Clip and Teez. 8 p.m., $18.

Office Christmas Party with DJ Giancarlo

On Saturday, Volcanic and DJ Giancarlo will host the Office Christmas Party, an evening of hip-hop, house, dance music and more. Just keep your butt off the copy machine or you’ll hear from Human Resources after the holiday. 10 p.m., $5.

The Polish Ambassador

Wednesday brings the return of beloved electronic music man The Polish Ambassador, who has played Central Oregon many times over the past decade-plus. His sound — nay, his entire persona, his vibe, his being — is so multi-faceted, it’s hard to nail him down to a few words or sentences.

And yet there’s a sentence in his official bio that sums up at least the music part of it pretty well: “The Polish Ambassador’s prolific output incorporates many styles, from exuberant global-house to fatback mid-tempo funk, you’ll pick up on West African percussion alongside stirring Kirtan melodies, a psychedelic sax solo or a fresh verse from a Brooklyn female emcee.”

Indeed, the Northern California beat-maker, producer and record label boss is among the most inventive, interesting and productive figures in electronic music, whether he’s working alone or collaborating with artists like Matisyahu, Zion I or The Grouch. To hear what he’s up to now, visit thepolishambassador.bandcamp.com and drop in on any of the tracks he has posted this year, or scroll down and check out stuff that’s more than a decade old but still sounds like it’s from the future.

The Polish Ambassador will perform Wednesday, Dec. 27, with Scott Nice and Yemanjo opening the show. 8 p.m., $25.
