Top Nike executive Andrew Campion to depart in April

Andrew Campion, one of Nike’s top executives since 2015, will leave the company on April 5, according to a separation agreement filed Friday with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission as part of the company’s quarterly earnings report.
The agreement does not give a reason for Campion’s departure. Nike did not immediately return a message seeking comment. Campion on Monday announced a new job with UCLA, his alma mater.
Campion is the highest-ranking Nike executive to leave the company since Trevor Edwards, president of the Nike brand, stepped down in 2018.
Campion served as Nike’s chief operating officer from 2015 until June 1, 2023, when the company moved him out of its C-suite, naming him managing director of strategic business ventures, a role in which he worked with CEO John Donahoe to find new business opportunities.
Before he served as chief operating officer, Campion was Nike’s chief financial officer from 2015 to 2020. He joined the company in 2007 as a vice president after 11 years at Disney.
Campion’s departure is the latest in a blitz of executive changes and business announcements for the company, which is working to regain lost momentum. In December, Nike said it expected sales to grow just 1% in the fiscal year that ends May 31, down from the mid-single digits increase expected six months ago. Last month, Nike announced it wants to cut $2 billion in costs over the next three years, a number that points to significant layoffs.
On Monday, Nike also announced it would part with 27-year endorser Tiger Woods. The announcement came as Nike workers filed back onto the company’s campus as part of a new four-day return-to-office policy.
When he served as chief operating officer, Campion’s work included overseeing the company’s “digital transformation,” work that was led by Ratnakar Lavu, the company’s chief digital information officer, who abruptly left the company in February.
Campion on Monday on LinkedIn announced his new role as director of UCLA’s new Sports Leadership and Management program. Campion and his wife, Shelby, hold bachelor’s degrees from UCLA. Andrew Campion also holds an MBA from UCLA. Shelby Campion also holds a graduate degree from USC.
“UCLA has had such a positive impact on both of us and our family,” Andrew Campion wrote on LinkedIn. “So, over the past year, we’ve been working with amazing leaders at UCLA on this opportunity for us to give back and also put our personal effort into helping provide inspiration, education and access to future generations of students seeking a career in sports.”
In an email to The Oregonian/OregonLive, Campion declined comment, except to say his move to UCLA has been in the works for months.
The UCLA Sports Leadership and Management program will be part of the UCLA Anderson School of Management’s Center for Media, Entertainment & Sports. It will work with undergraduate and graduate students who want to work in sports. The Campions are among the program’s funders.
The Campions also are minority owners of the Real Salt Lake Major League Soccer team and the National Women’s Soccer League’s Utah Royals.
Campion earned $9.5 million in compensation from Nike in the fiscal year that ended May 31, 2023, according to the company’s most recent proxy statement. The company will make a one-time $2.75 million payment to him at the end of his employment, according to Friday’s SEC filing.
