Volcanic Theatre Pub welcomes Hippie Death Cult

If you’ve never dug deep into the contemporary guitar-rock underground — think doom metal, stoner rock, psych, heavy blues, prog, acid rock and so on — rest assured, it is … let’s just say “extensive.” On my favorite online music platform, Bandcamp.com, there are approximately 9 bazillion of these kinds of bands out there, many with similar riffs, similar guitar pedals and similar album art.

Some set themselves apart, of course, just like any other genre. Portland’s Hippie Death Cult, for example, is one of the best of the bunch, thanks not only to their eye-catching name, but also their memorable songs, Eddie Brnabic’s top-shelf guitar work and, most strikingly, bassist and vocalist Laura Phillips’ entrancing and wizardly singing voice. She sounds like she was brought to Earth specifically to sing for a stoney, riff-tastic psych-rock band named Hippie Death Cult.

The band’s 2023 album “Helichrysum” is a winner, but you don’t have to take my word for it. Elevar Magazine called it “a refreshing escape from the typical in stoner metal.” The Sleeping Shaman praised it as “heavy, memorable and superbly played.” Invisible Oranges called it “more artful than most (stoner rock) and singularly captivating.” While none other than CBS News (!) said it “marks another quantum leap forward” for the band.

Hippie Death Cult: 8 p.m. Saturday, $12 in advance, $15 at the door, Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Drive, Bend, volcanictheatre.com.
