Anthony James Dorsch

April 8, 1941 – November 30, 2023

Tony Dorsch, 82, passed away at home on November 30, 2023. A science teacher at Redmond High School for 25 years, Dorsch served two decades on the board of Central Oregon Community College and on the Redmond City Council 1978-1986.

Dorsch was born in Stevens Point, Wisconsin and moved to Central Oregon in 1946. A 1959 graduate of Redmond Union High School, he was student body president and wrestled for the state championship team. Later he served as a coach of the high school wrestling team.

In 1963, he graduated from Willamette University where he majored in biology. He earned a Master of Science degree from Oregon State University and taught at Linfield College.

He married Diane (Hunnex) Dorsch on June 21, 1964. As RHS teachers, they led educational trips to Europe and organized student exchange programs.

An avid hunter and fisherman, Tony also enjoyed cross country skiing, sailing, gardening and farming. He operated a small bakery and played clarinet and baritone in the COCC concert band.

Dorsch helped ensure that the original Community Presbyterian Church building in Redmond was added to the National Register of Historic Places. He was a steadfast advocate for COCC’s expansion into Redmond. Room 305 in building three of the Redmond campus is named in his honor. While serving on city council, he supported expansion of the Redmond Airport.

If it weren’t for the efforts of Dorsch and others during the 1970s and 80s, Redmond’s Dry Canyon may not today be graced with miles of trails, parks and open space.

Dorsch was preceded in death by parents John, MD, and Agnes, as well as sister Mary (Dorsch) Rost. He is survived by his wife, Diane, sons Andy and Ed, four grandchildren and brother John. The family plans a private celebration of life.
