Former Bend High star Luke Musgrave scores TD for Packers in playoff win

Luke Musgrave didn’t stumble this time.

The Green Bay Packers’ tight end and former Bend High and Oregon State star scored his first touchdown in a playoff game on Sunday. Musgrave caught a 38-yard scoring pass from quarterback Jordan Love during the Packers’ dominant 48-32 win over the Dallas Cowboys in a Wild Card playoff game.

Musgrave, wide open on the play, caught the pass and barreled through the would-be tackle of Cowboys’ safety Jayron Kearse and scored.

Musgrave’s score against the Cowboys was nearly identical to his near-touchdown against the Chicago Bears during Week 1 of the regular season. Musgrave was wide open and caught a pass, but he stumbled and fell to ground before he could walk into the end zone.

The rookie tight end finished his first playoff game with three catches for 52 yards. The seventh-seed Packers will travel to play the top-seeded San Fransisco 49ers Saturday in an NFC Divisional playoff game, with the winner advancing to the NFC Championship Game.

Musgrave suffered a lacerated kidney in a Nov. 19 game against the Los Angeles Chargers and missed six games before returning for the final game of the regular season on Jan. 7, a 17-9 win over the Chicago Bears.

In 12 games, the second-round draft pick has caught 34 passes for 352 yards and two touchdowns.

Musgrave said he was in pain after the Nov. 19 game. When he went to the bathroom he saw blood in his urine.

“I put the pieces together pretty quickly, kind of knew that was a problem,” he said last month.

Musgrave went to the emergency room, where he learned he had a lacerated kidney. Because the severity increased overnight, doctors kept him for an additional night. While he avoided surgery, the injury derailed an excellent debut season.

“Yeah, it wasn’t awesome,” Musgrave said. “Internal organs are definitely a little bit different than your normal football injury.”

Nothing other than rest can heal a lacerated kidney, and reinjury can cause significant trouble. But Musgrave appears to be back to normal, as his touchdown catch on Sunday gave the Packers a 41-16 lead in their upset playoff win over the Cowboys.

The 6-6, 254-pound Musgrave is a 2019 graduate of Bend High who went on to a solid college career with the Beavers, but suffered a left knee injury in week 2 of the 2022 season and did not return the rest of the year. He drastically improved his draft stock after his performances at the NFL scouting combine and the Senior Bowl, and was selected by the Packers as the 42nd overall pick in the 2023 draft.

Musgrave — the nephew of former Oregon and NFL quarterback Bill Musgrave — is part of a talented young receiving corps for the Packers, helping new starting quarterback Jordan Love find success and lead them to the playoff win over the Cowboys.
