Mike Carter
August 23, 1942 – December 10, 2023
Michael Ernest Carter was born August 23, 1942, to Ernest and Florence “Mae” Carter in La Grande, Oregon, and passed away on December 10, 2023, in Sacramento, California. He was raised in Haines, Oregon, with two younger sisters, Judy and Jan. He graduated from Baker City High School.
Mike was a proud Certified Lumber Grader, working for Brooks-Scanlon Lumber Company from 1964 until 1973 when Mike and partners Frank Cammack and Loren Irving formed wholesale lumber company Deschutes Pine Sales. He was a Board Member of Central Oregon Truck Co. Mike retired in 2007 and did not slow down – he had a lot of hobbies!
Mike was a dedicated outdoorsman, spending much of his free time both before and after retirement hiking, camping, fishing, and hunting. He was a passionate fisherman, traveling from Alaska to Chile and most recently fishing the Sacramento River near Redding. He loved hunting big game and birds with his family, friends, and the many beloved dogs he raised and trained over his lifetime. His sons often commented that it was hard to plan anything with Dad post-retirement due to his very busy schedule.
Mike enjoyed following high school, college, and professional sports and was always excited to cheer on the Oregon State Beavers, from which his three sons graduated.
Mike married Carol Fields in 1972. He had four children: daughter Claudine (Ron Walker), and sons Rob (Eileen), Troy (Erin) and Travis (Shannon). He adored his grandchildren: Scotty, Ben, Christie, Owen, Evelyn, Cooper, Kadyn and Titus. He also had 10 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved very much. Mike was predeceased by his parents and sisters.
Mike and Carol loved to travel, visiting Mexico, Hawaii, Panama, Canada, Europe, Southeast Asia, and many parts of the U.S. They enjoyed theater and music, often seeing concerts and shows in their beloved hometown of Bend, Oregon.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Spring 2024 in Bend, Oregon.
