Vote: Meet the nominees for Athletes of the Week (Jan. 8-13)

Here are the candidates for The Bulletin’s Athletes of the Week for Jan. 8-13 as nominated by local coaches and The Bulletin sports staff.

Girls

Mylaena Norton, Redmond basketball: In two games last week, Norton finished with 21 points, five assists and seven steals in a 69-52 win over Summit on Jan. 9, then had 24 points, three rebounds and four steals in a 67-49 win over Caldera Jan. 12. Norton hit 10 3s during the two games.

Mia Pedersen, Redmond wrestling: At the Oregon Wrestling Classic, Pedersen won all three of her matches, including a win over Sweet Home’s Bailey Chafin, a state champion last season and top-ranked wrestler this year.

Peyton Smith, Bend basketball: The sophomore post turned in a double-double against Mountain View on Jan. 9 when she scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds against the Cougars.

Boys

Jared Ake, Redmond wrestling: The 152-pounder won all seven of his matches with six pins at the Oregon Wrestling Classic on Jan. 12-13, including a win over Thurston’s Jaden Ellis, who is one of the top wrestlers in the 152-pound weight-classes in the state. Ake helped Redmond win its first ever Oregon Wrestling Classic title.

Brady Johns, Mountain View wrestling: The 157-pounder won all eight of his matches at the Oregon Wrestling Classic. He tallied four pins, one technical fall and two major decisions to help the Cougars finish fourth at the tournament.

Scout Santos, Mountain View wrestling: Santos finished with three pins and won all six of his matches at the Oregon Wrestling Classic to help the Cougars finish fourth at the tournament.

Kale Gardner, Sisters basketball: The junior scored 26 points on 11-of-21 shooting while also grabbing six rebounds and dishing out three assists in the Outlaws’ 55-53 win over Elmira on Jan. 8.

Jack Bents, Caldera basketball: In Caldera’s 54-48 win over Redmond on Jan. 12, Bents hit four 3s and scored 22 points to help the Wolfpack stay undefeated in IMC play.

Trace Benner, Caldera basketball: In the same game against Redmond, Benner nearly turned in a double-double when he grabbed 10 rebounds and finished with nine points.

Jakob Hansen, Summit basketball: The senior finished with 12 points, including three 3-pointers in the second half to help the Storm pull away from Mountain View 63-38 on Jan. 12.
