A winter weather advisory has been issued for southern Deschutes County. The advisory will be in effect from 1 p.m. on Tuesday until 10 p.m. on Wednesday.

Residents in south Deschutes County, including Sunriver and La Pine, can expect snow accumulations of 5 to 9 inches and ice accumulations of around two-tenths of an inch, according to the advisory issued Monday by the National Weather Service.

Higher snow accumulations are expected in the Cascade Range along with wind gusts as high as 60 mph.

The advisory warns drivers that travel could be difficult to impossible with hazardous weather conditions affecting morning and evening commutes. Strong winds could cause extensive damage to trees and power lines. The weather service advises motorists to review tripcheck.com before getting on the highway.

The new system is forecast to bring rain and freezing rain to Bend with a southwest wind of 18 to 25 mph on Wednesday. The snow level is forecast to be 4,900 feet. The weather service has also issued a winter weather advisory for Bend, Madras, Prineville and Redmond from 4 p.m. Tuesday to 4 p.m. Wednesday.

“The upcoming week for Central Oregon looks messy,” said Cole Evans, a meteorologist with the weather service office in Pendleton. “We have another winter weather advisory in effect for Bend for Tuesday night into Wednesday, with light snow and freezing rain expected. It’s a tough forecast, but our advisory calls for up to an inch of snow and up to a tenth of an inch of ice accumulation.”

The rapid warming expected during the day Tuesday through the rest of the week will make for a mixed precipitation forecast, said Evans.
