OSU football: Beavers add QB depth in the transfer portal (e-edition)

When Oregon State football coach Trent Bray spoke on signing day in December, he said this year’s class would probably include more players from the transfer portal than a typical year, due to the amount of turnover on the roster.

The Beavers lost 12 players to the portal but Bray and his staff have backfilled the roster with 15 incoming transfers, as of this week.

Bray said the team needed to add depth at quarterback and Oregon State has done that with the signings of Gabarri Johnson from Missouri and Gevani McCoy from Idaho.

Johnson redshirted this season with the Tigers and has four years of eligibility remaining. He is from the Pacific Northwest and played for Lincoln High in Tacoma, Washington.

McCoy started the past two seasons at Idaho, throwing for 5,629 yards with 42 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. He led the Vandals to the quarterfinals of the FCS playoffs.

The Beavers also brought home a wide receiver who started his career at Michigan. Darrius Clemons was a four-star recruit from Westview High in Portland and brings great size to the position at 6-foot-3. Clemons will help the Beavers fill the hole left by the losses of Anthony Gould, who is entering the draft, and Silas Bolden, who announced Tuesday he was transferring to Texas.

The other offensive transfer of note is running back Jam Griffin. This move really is a homecoming for Griffin, who started his career at Georgia Tech, spent the 2022 season at Oregon State, transferred to Mississippi for the 2023 season and is now back at Oregon State.

Griffin had his most productive season with the Beavers, running for almost 500 yards and four touchdowns.

Oregon State has also added linebacker DJ Wesolak, a four-star high school recruit from Missouri, defensive backs Sai Vadrawale III from California and Kobe Singleton from Liberty, and defensive linemen Tygee Hill from LSU and Tevita Pome’e from Oregon.

Singleton was a starting cornerback on a Liberty team that went undefeated before losing to Oregon in the Fiesta Bowl. Singleton had 41 tackles this year with four interceptions and 12 pass breakups.

One player who had committed to Oregon State out of the transfer portal, Indiana edge rusher Anthony Jones, decommitted and reopened his recruitment.

In addition to the player signings, Bray has also continued to fill out his staff. On Tuesday, Oregon State announced that JR Moala will be the director of recruiting, Madison Sweezy will serve as the director of football administration and Marco Candido is remaining on the staff to serve as the football strength and conditioning coach.

Moala previously served as a quality control coach and intern at Oregon State from 2015 to 2017. Most recently he served as the director of recruiting operations at Oregon.
