From the editor’s desk: Weathering the storm

- Ice covers tree needles on Wednesday in Tigard, Ore.
My truck looked like it was covered in tiny bubble wrap; hermetically sealed in ice as I reached for the door handle and realized the doors were frozen shut. It’s hard to get leverage on the door when your feet are slipping from underneath you.
Most of us experienced this this past week when a series of snow, rain and ice storms converged on Central Oregon. It forced us to slow down — well, crawl — while driving home from work.
Even for our seasoned staff, it seems that the week was full of distractions as we lurched from breaking news story to breaking news story. Any plans for other coverage literally went out the window as we were pummeled with stories about the weather.
The beauty of delivering news via our digital sites, is we can update it on a dime. Our staff excelled at gathering up the lists of closures and delays at schools and government agencies. As new closures came in, we had them posted, keeping readers in the loop.
There were also tragedies, such as three fatal car accidents and a hypothermia death. The bad news just seemed to keep coming in waves.
Posting breaking news almost as it happens on our digital sites gives readers a head’s up before the storms hit. If you use our news app, or sign up for breaking news notifications, you can be alerted to changing weather conditions in real time.
No matter how you receive our news — through our news app, social media, our e-edition or from our website, we hope it is serving your interests.
Please feel free to contact us with any thoughts or issues you may have.
And thanks for reading.
