School closures postpone numerous prep sports events across Central Oregon

Snow days that lead to school being canceled are all fun and games until activities get postponed.

Whether it was snow, freezing rain or a combination of both, Central Oregon (all of Oregon, really) had high school basketball and wrestling contests get postponed throughout the past week.

“I’ve seen a little bit of freezing rain here,” said Bend High athletic director Lowell Norby. “But nothing like this and I’ve been here since 1987.”

The only Central Oregon school district to remain open on Friday was Sisters, meaning all the other Central Oregon school districts’ sports teams were not able to have practice or contests. And given the point of the season — in the middle of league play and nearing district tournaments — the contests need to be rescheduled.

When snow days happen, athletic directors still have a busy day trying to make schedule adjustments so that postponed contests can be made up.

“We are at a point in the year where we are getting to the end of the seasons,” Norby said. “We are starting the second round of league play. You start to find open days, then find officials.”

For the Intermountain Conference, the Friday boys and girls basketball games that were postponed have been rescheduled for Monday, Jan. 29.

The Crook County, Trinity Lutheran and Culver basketball teams will have two conference games to make up after weather conditions postponed games last week.

Swimming and wrestling are more complicated to reschedule. Because the four Bend-area high school swim teams share the same pool at Juniper Swim & Fitness Center, and it is also used by the public, scheduling can be tricky. Thus far, no swim meets have been postponed in Central Oregon, according to osaa.org.

Bend High’s three-way wrestling dual meet on Thursday with Summit and Caldera was postponed. The results from dual meets are used to determine seeding at the district championships, so all dual meets must be rescheduled.

On Saturday, the Bend Middle School City Championships will be held at Bend High. The plan is to use one of the mats at that event to make up the three-way dual meet that was postponed on Thursday. According to Norby, the wrestling teams received the go-ahead on Friday from Bend-La Pine School District to compete on Saturday.
