- Prolific songwriter May Erlewine plays folk Friday at The Belfry.
If you’ve been reading Bulletin music coverage for a while, you might’ve seen me or one of our other esteemed writers quote the website Allmusic.com in articles. Founded in 1991, Allmusic has long been considered one of the most exhaustive and authoritative websites focused on music, thanks to its database of millions of albums, songs, musicians and more.
Well here’s a fun fact: Allmusic was started by an astrologer, musician and entrepreneur named Michael Erlewine, who just so happens to be the father of folk singer May Erlewine, who’ll play The Belfry in Sisters Friday night. Interesting!
May Erlewine is much more than just Michael Erlewine’s daughter, of course. A prolific songwriter, she has released an average of around an album per year over the past two decades, most as a solo artist but also in collaboration with other songwriters and with the bands The Motivations and The Sweet Water Warblers. Her tunes are beautiful examples of folk music through a modern lens, setting lyrics about the trials and triumphs of everyday life against melodic tunes built from guitars, piano, honeyed vocals and an irrepressible pop sensibility.
May Erlewine, with R.O. Shapiro and Joel Chadd: 7 p.m. Friday, $20 in advance, $25 at the door, The Belfry, 302 E. Main Ave., Sisters, belfryevents.com.
