The Portland Thorns have re-signed Becky Sauerbrunn, the club announced Tuesday.

The club signed the defender to a one-year extension through the 2024 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season.

“I’m thrilled to be continuing my career with the Thorns as we enter a new era for the club,” Sauerbrunn said in a statement. “And as we welcome new ownership and investment, I’m thankful for the opportunity to play for the city and supporters that have always made being a Thorn such an unrivaled experience.”

Sauerbrunn, 38, will begin her fifth season with the Thorns. She is a four-time winner of the league’s Defender of the Year award and she helped the Thorns win the NWSL title in 2022, adding to the two titles she won as a member of the now defunct FC Kansas City.

The Thorns acquired Sauerbrunn in a trade with the Utah Royals prior to the 2020 season. She has appeared in 42 matches, bringing her NWSL career total to 164.

A longtime member of the U.S. Women’s National Team, Sauerbrunn won the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2015 and 2019, and a gold medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
