A Bend father is facing criminal charges after he shot his 7-year-old son at their home Sunday afternoon, according to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident was an accident, according to Sheriff’s Sgt. Jason Wall.
Roy Ipock, 32, faces charges of third-degree assault, recklessly endangering another person and negligent wounding in the shooting of the boy, said Wall.
Police did not name the boy but said he was taken to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, where he was in stable condition Monday afternoon.
The sheriff’s office does not generally name juveniles due to privacy concerns, Wall said.
Police responded to a report of “an apparent gunshot wound” at around 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Wall said. The initial reports said a 7-year-old boy had been shot by accident.
Ipock was “manipulating” a handgun in the living room of their home on Hunnell Road just north of Bend when the gun went off, striking the boy around his armpit, Wall said.
The boy had been sitting at the end of the couch, playing video games and not looking at his father when the gun went off, Wall said.
“The father in no way shape or form intended to do that,” Wall told The Bulletin on Monday. He added, “It was a tragic accident.”
Emergency responders took the boy to St. Charles Bend before he was transported to Portland.
Detectives interviewed people who were present when the shooting occurred, searched the home and collected evidence. Ipock cooperated with the investigation, Wall said. Police cited him for the alleged crimes instead of taking him into custody.
Ipock could not immediately be reached for comment.
“This investigation is on-going, further details may be released when they become available,” Wall said.
According to Oregon law, a person commits third-degree assault if he or she “recklessly” injures a person with a weapon.
Neither Deschutes County District Attorney Steve Gunnels nor Wall would disclose what evidence there was that Ipock was reckless.
Ipock has no prior criminal history in Oregon, according to court records.
