REDMOND — In a final tune-up before the swimming season’s championship run, the Ridgeview and Redmond swim teams met to determine the town’s top high school squad.
The Redmond swim team won the R-Town Meet with a combined score of 890 points (469 from the girls team and 421 from the boys team), beating its crosstown rival Ridgeview, which finished with a combined score of 607 (238 girls, 369 boys).
“It feels amazing,” said Redmond senior Dylan Hall. “A lot of our swimmers have been swimming for the team and the club, so we have been putting in double the work and effort. That is the main key to our success. We have swimmers who are working hard and getting it done.”
Panther swimmers finished first in each of the 15 races Thursday evening in the Cascade Swim Center’s 25-meter pool.
“I think we did pretty good,” said Redmond coach Denise Maich, shortly after she was tossed into the pool for a celebratory swim. “I tried to spread everyone out so we had a good chance at getting points in all the events. In most events we had at least one person so we could get enough points. We tried to put people in events where they could at least score some points.”
Five different Panther girls won individual events at the R-Town Meet. The team was led by first-place finishes from sophomore Leah Bernard (50-meter freestyle, 30.80, and 100-meter butterfly, 1:22.53), who won two individual events; junior Willow Messner (200-meter freestyle, 2:17.43); junior Ashlyn Carnes Dunn (200-meter individual medley, 3:02.65); junior Molly Konop (100-meter freestyle, 1:05.63) and junior Apollo Bezdek (400-meter freestyle, 5:30.04).
“What we have been doing in practice is carrying over to meets and it really showed here tonight,” Konop said.
“We work as a team and get better every day.”
Junior Stewart Bolic (200-meter individual medly 2:39.42, and 50-meter freestyle, 29.72) won two individual events for the Panthers boys team.
Senior TJ Hall (200-meter freestyle, 2:39.90), senior Dylan Hall (100-meter butterfly, 1:12.26), junior Oliver Riding (6:19.61) and freshman Connor Yuma (100-meter freestyle, 1:04.12) also had first-place finishes.
Redmond also finished first in all three of the relays (400-meter freestyle relay and the boys 200-meter freestyle relay did not take place on Thursday).
The girls team of Messner, Konop, Bernard and Carnes Dunn won both the 200-meter medley relay (2:16.04) and the 200-meter freestyle relay (2:02.33). The boys team of Yuma, Dylan Hall, TJ Hall and Bolic won the 200-meter medley (2:12.02).
Now the Panthers and the Ravens prepare for the Intermountain Conference district championships at Juniper Swim & Fitness Center on Feb. 9-10, where teams and swimmers will have a chance to qualify for the state meet.
“We are just trying to figure out where people are going to swim,” Maich said. “We want to figure out how to score the most points at districts, and also stack kids in events so that kids have the chance to make it to state.”
When next weekend comes, the Panthers feel they will be ready to compete.
“We are close to peaking,” Hall said. “At least I hope so. Obviously there is the stress and anxiety that isn’t going to be there. I feel like we should get there soon. I feel like at districts we can pull it together and get some good swims in.”
