Tower Theatre hosts International Guitar Night

As you surely know, you can watch people play guitar in a lot of different ways. Pick an evening and show up at a live music venue, and chances are you’ll see someone bash their way through some amplified power chords or strum E-C-G over and over again on an acoustic or rip through an electrifying (and electrified) solo.

And there is nothing wrong with any of those methods. They can all be awesome when done well, or even just with passion.

The Tower Theatre, however, has something else to offer on Tuesday. That’s when the International Guitar Night tour’s 38-city journey comes to Bend, with four stunningly skilled guitar players on the bill. Here’s a roundup of them:

Luca Stricagnoli is an Italian player whose dazzling skills have made him a YouTube star. Check out video of him playing pop hits by Red Hot Chili Peppers and Michael Jackson to hear how he uses a triple-necked guitar to play percussion, bass and melody all at the same time. He sounds like a band all by himself.

• Speaking of Michael Jackson, his guitarist, Jennifer Batten, is a certified legend, so it means something when she calls Minnie Marks a “badass.” Marks is an Australian singer, songwriter, slide guitar player and one-person band with a foot drum providing a back beat and the early 20th century Mississippi Delta providing the inspiration for her gritty brand of blues.

• If it’s pure six-stringed beauty you seek, Thu Le is your guitarist. A native of Vietnam, she is a world-class player whose repertoire encompasses the baroque, classical, romantic, modern and Latin American styles. Visit her website to hear her gorgeous takes on virtuosic pianist Frédéric Chopin, Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim and traditional Vietnamese music.

And speaking of Brazilian music, classical guitarist Marco Pereira was born in São Paulo, studied under Uruguyan master Isaias Sávio and then went to school in Paris, where he picked up jazz and Latin American influences alongside his distinctive Brazilian sound. The guy plays with a grace and gentleness that is uncommon and incredibly easy on the ears.

Now imagine them all on tour together. Mesmerizing! On Tuesday night, each will take the spotlight for solos, as well as duets and collaborations including the whole quartet.

International Guitar Night XXIV: 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, $35-$51, Tower Theatre 835 NW Wall Street, Bend, towertheatre.org.
