- Swimmers dive off the bocks to commence the 100-yard freestyle during the IMC district championships Saturday afternoon at Juniper Swim & Fitness Center in Bend.
The two reigning Class 5A state swimming champions — the Bend High girls and the Summit boys — repeated as Intermountain Conference champions at the IMC District Championships Saturday afternoon at Juniper Swim & Fitness Center in Bend.
But it was Caldera’s Campbell McKean who dazzled the crowd on hand with not one, but two state record-breaking performances.
Based on records set at state swimming meets, McKean’s time of 1 minute, 49.51 seconds in the 200-yard individual medley was the state’s fastest 5A time ever. He followed up with another record-breaking swim in the 100 breaststroke, with a time of 54.41.
The result in the breaststroke isn’t just a 5A record — it is a record across all classifications, breaking the one last held by Brian Frazier of Oregon City, whose time of 55.40 was set in 2015.
“For the 100 breast, I had that time memorized. I have been looking at those times for a couple of months now,” said McKean, who is committed to swim at the University of Southern California. “I thought I could probably reach them at state. But I figured I would go for it at districts.”
Last year, as a sophomore, McKean won two individual titles, winning the 200 IM and the 100 backstroke. A couple more state titles, and perhaps another state record or two might be in play at the Feb. 16-17 state championships at the Tualatin Hills Aquatic Center in Beaverton.
“I think I can beat these times,” McKean said. “I’m definitely going to go for them.”
Bend High girls flex
The Bend High girls set two 5A state records in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays last year. On Saturday, they broke the record in the only relay they did not compete in a year ago.
The Lava Bears started off the IMC championships with a resounding win in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:44.88. The team of sophomore Maddie Thornton, junior Hadley Hayes, sophomore Emma Bronson and junior Kamryn Meskill’s time was good enough for the 5A record set by Mountain View (1:46.89) at last year’s state meet, and just shy of the state record set by Jesuit (1:44.23) at the 2017 state meet.
“We knew that we could do it,” Meskill said. “We have a strong group of girls this year — now our next step is to go for the OSAA record.”
It was a dominant showing for the Lava Bears girls on Saturday. Of the 11 events, Bend High had a swimmer finish first in nine of them.
Thornton won the girls 200 IM (2:05.76) and the 100 backstroke (56.43). Meskill won the girls 50 freestyle (23.13) and the 100 freestyle (51.21). Bronson won the girls 100 butterfly (58.34). Hayes won the 100 breaststroke (1:05.56).
The team of senior Jacquelyn Horning, Bronson, senior Elizabeth Williams and Meskill won the girls 200 freestyle relay (1:40.11). Thornton, Williams, senior Ella Herron and Horning gave the Lava Bears a sweep in the relays with a win in the 400 freestyle (3:45.50).
“We have such a strong group of girls this year,” Meskill said. “I think we can do a lot of awesome things at state this year. It just comes down to whether or not we can get the job done.”
Storm boys set the pace
The Summit boys also had a dominant showing on Saturday with a sweep of the three relays and five individual champions.
Freshman Rafael Maloney, sophomore Ethan Chao, sophomore Brecken Egeland and sophomore August Erber won the boys 200 medley relay (1:47.19). The team of senior Hunter McGrane, junior Holden Short, Erber and Landon Egeland won the boys 200 freestyle relay (1:33.71). Short, McGrane, Brecken Egeland and Landon Egeland won the 400 freestyle relay (3:45.50).
Junior Landon Egeland won the 200 freestyle (1:44.53) and the 500 freestyle (4:45.74). Brecken Egeland won the boys 100 butterfly (53.62) and 100 freestyle (50.87). The team of senior Hunter McGrane, junior Holden Short, Erber and Landon Egeland won the boys 200 freestyle relay (1:33.71). And Maloney won the 100 backstroke (1:00.28).
“It was just a bunch of good, tough racing,” said Summit coach Nolan Morrell. “Everybody was knocking off time and moving up places. In meets like these, you need the big guns to win their events. But you need everyone to move up a place or two, and I thought we did a really good job at that today.”
Mountain View had a pair of champions in sophomore Logan Gose, who won the boys 50 freestyle (23.03), and senior Sienna LeFeber, who won the 500 freestyle (5:13.90).
