Increasingly, it feels like we could run a story headlined “A big week at Volcanic Theatre Pub” every week. The concert venue on Bend’s westside just keeps getting busier and busier, and it keeps bringing in bigger and better touring acts.
This week, for example, the VTP calendar features five shows in seven nights, each headlined by an out-of-town artist that tours around the country. Here’s who’s coming to the venue:
• First up, it’s the return of Connecticut “prog-tronic power trio” Lespecial, who’ve become regulars ‘round here in recent years. Last spring, I called them “definitely heavy and riff-centric, but also rhythmically varied (like prog-rock), with regular jaunts into a more electronic, bass-forward sound.” Basically, they’re like a cross between a metal act, a dubstep DJ and a jam band. And they rock! Spunj and High Gain Theory open the show. 8 p.m. Thursday, doors open 7 p.m. $20 in advance, $25 at the door.
• Back in January, winter weather postponed a local appearance by Portland stoner rock band Hippie Death Cult. They’ll make up for that Saturday with local shoegazers Dead Nettle opening. You can read all about Hippie Death Cult here. 8 p.m. Saturday, doors open 7 p.m. $12 in advance, $15 at the door.
• To get a sense for Sunny Sweeney’s spot on the spectrum of country music, check out the guests on her most recent album “Married Alone,” released in 2022: Old-school polymath and world-class picker Vince Gill, plus up-and-coming outlaw throwback Paul Cauthen. Originally from Texas, Sweeney splits the difference, playing a brand of country that feels rooted in tradition but sports a modern edge. If you’re a fan of Miranda Lambert, check her out. 8 p.m. Sunday, doors open 7 p.m. $18.
• Fifteen years ago, Malian guitarist Vieux Farka Touré played Munch & Music in downtown Bend and turned in one of the most joyful and inspiring shows in the history of the long-running concert series. Next week, he returns as one of the global stars of African music, thanks to his soulful blend of vibrant rock, desert blues and the traditional folk music of his home country. His 2022 collaboration with Khruangbin, “Ali,” spills over with “inspired grooves to get lost in,” says The Guardian. Yes, Khruangbin! You know them! Paeonia opens the show. 8 p.m. Tuesday, doors open 7 p.m. $18.
• A double-shot of livetronica and electro-funk dance music descends upon Bend Wednesday night as Yak Attack and Banshee Tree play together at Volcanic. Expect hours of highly likeable sounds and irresistible urges to dance! 8 p.m. Wednesday, doors open 7 p.m., $17 in advance, $20 at the door.
