A 70-year-old Bend man died in a snowmobile crash in Alaska on Friday.

Glenn Cantor was driving his snowmobile with a group along Denali Highway when he crashed into the rear of another snowmobile, according to a news release from the Alaska Department of Public Safety.

Both snowmobiles left the trail, and Cantor’s snowmobile landed on top of him, the news release said.

Members of the group tried to save Cantor and used satellite communications devices to call for help at 4:03 p.m., the news release said. Alaska State Troopers and Wildlife Troopers responded to the area, where they found Cantor dead.

Authorities have notified Cantor’s family and transported his body to a state medical examiner for an autopsy.

Cantor worked as a research scientist focused on drugs for cancer treatment, an obituary published Monday in The Bulletin said. He worked as a veterinarian and was a professor of veterinary medicine at Washington State University, served in the Peace Corps in Ecuador and volunteered as a veterinarian with the Iditarod, an annual dog sledding race through Alaska.
