Central Oregon A Cappella Festival heads to Sunriver

Voctave, an 11-piece a cappella group from Orlando, Florida, is known for its vocal arrangements of modern pop songs, holiday favorites, showtunes and, especially, beloved tunes from Disney films.

Whether you’re talking about a rock combo, a jazz ensemble, a gamelan, a brass band, or an orchestra, it’s almost always fun to watch a group of instrumentalists come together to play a piece of music.

And yet there is something particularly and uniquely transfixing about listening to an a cappella group do what it does best — sing unaccompanied. Truly, there is nothing quite like a crew of talented vocalists bringing to life a tower of beautiful sound using nothing more than their collective voice.

That’s the basic idea behind the annual Central Oregon A Cappella Festival, which takes shape in a new form this weekend. Previously held at downtown Bend’s Tower Theatre and known as Bend A Cappella Festival, this year’s version will take place Saturday at Sunriver Resort’s Homestead Ballroom, with an “Art in Nature” snowshoe tour planned for Sunday that will feature a bonfire and a concert by Bend Camerata in a natural amphitheater in the Deschutes National Forest.

The festival is a collaboration between the Tower Theatre Foundation, Sunriver Music Festival and Wanderlust Tours.

“We are so excited to host this year’s A Cappella Festival at Sunriver Resort, offering a unique opportunity for a cappella enthusiasts, music lovers, and aspiring vocalists to be part of this extraordinary experience,” said the Tower’s Director of Education, Dani Wyeth, in a press release. “Join us for an event that promises to be a celebration of vocal artistry!”

Saturday night’s concert will feature a rare Northwest performance by Voctave, an 11-piece a cappella group from Orlando, Florida known for its vocal arrangements of modern pop songs, holiday favorites, showtunes and, especially, beloved tunes from Disney films. Their music is strikingly beautiful, technically on point and incredibly robust, and seeing them fill the Homestead Ballroom with only their voices should be a special experience.

Tickets are sold separately for each day of the festival. Saturday tickets are on sale now at towertheatre.org and Sunday snowshoe tour tickets may be purchased at wanderlusttours.com.
