A five-vehicle crash killed a Redmond resident and injured two other people early Monday morning on U.S. Highway 97 in Jefferson County.
According to a news release from Oregon State Police, the crash occurred about 5 miles north of the Deschutes County line when two commercial vehicles traveling south collided with each other while traveling on icy roads about 4:16 a.m. The rear vehicle struck the leading vehicle from behind, causing the leading trailer to slide sideways into the northbound lane. The trailer was then struck by a red Toyota Tacoma, a white Toyota Tacoma and a GMC Sierra, all of which were traveling north.
Neither driver of the commercial vehicles — Mark Williams, 64, of Hood River, and Corey Heikklia, 41, of Portland — were injured. The driver of the GMC, James Johnson, 60, of Terrebonne, and driver of the white Toyota Tacoma, Timothy Fuzi, 52, of Terrebonne, were also uninjured.
The red Toyota Tacoma suffered the most damage, and both the driver, Felipe Gamboa-Lupercio, 55, of Terrebonne, and passenger Genaro Gamboa-Lupercio, 62, of Redmond, were transported to a hospital that state police did not identify. Another passenger, Jose Refugio Gamboa-Lupercio, 57, of Redmond, was declared dead at the scene.
The crash impacted the highway until approximately 9 a.m., when OSP concluded its investigation. The primary factors in the crash were roadway conditions and speed, stated OSP.
