City of Bend to hold transportation fee listening sessions

Published 1:30 pm Thursday, February 22, 2024

The city of Bend will host two listening sessions so the public can learn more about its upcoming transportation fee, which residents will have to pay to maintain the city’s transportation system.

The sessions are scheduled from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Monday and from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Thursday. Both meetings will have a virtual option in addition to being held in person in the council chambers at City Hall, 710 NW Wall St.

Revenue from the fee will eventually be used for operations and maintenance of the city’s transportation system, the city said in a Thursday press release. That could include street preservation and maintenance, signs, striping, concrete work, bicycle enhancements, street sweeping and cleaning, snow removal and more.

Revenue will be restricted to work by the city’s transportation and mobility department, the city said.

Fees differ from taxes in several ways. Fees are generally targeted toward a specific group of the population, such as those who have a greater impact on Bend’s transportation system, and revenue from those fees are typically set aside for specific services. Taxes tend to have a much broader application. New taxes also require voter approval while new fees do not.
