Justin Herbert’s first four seasons in the NFL have been very good. The Los Angeles Chargers quarterback’s fifth year could be even better.
The Chargers hired Jim Harbaugh as their new head coach and predictions from around the league is Harbaugh will elevate Herbert’s game to a new level. A couple of NFL analysts predict Herbert could be the NFL’s Most Valuable Player in 2024.
ESPN NFL Insider Jeremy Fowler expects Harbaugh will “help the talented passer put it all together” and win the MVP award.
“New coach Jim Harbaugh will streamline the offense for Herbert and help the talented passer put it all together. He’ll trade gaudy stats for more wins, more efficiency and a stronger running game.”
ESPN NFL front office insider Mike Tannenbaum also said Herbert will be the league’s MVP if “he plays in all 17 games.”
“Herbert’s 2023 season ended early because of a finger injury, but if he plays all 17 games in 2024, he will put up MVP-caliber numbers. The Chargers can work to recover their power run game and play-action passing attack under Harbaugh, and that should lead to a big season for Herbert.”
Harbaugh has a reputation of elevating the level of play from his quarterbacks.
Harbaugh was Andrew Luck’s coach for two seasons at Stanford, before Luck was the No. 1 pick in the 2012 NFL draft. Colin Kaepernick produced some of the best seasons of his career under Harbaugh in San Francisco, where they reached the NFC championship game three consecutive seasons.
Harbaugh guided quarterback J.J. McCarthy and the Michigan Wolverines to a national championship last season.
