Heavy snow Sunday afternoon through Monday could make travel in the north Oregon Cascades very difficult, according to a storm warning issued by the National Weather Service.

The winter storm warning is effective from 4 p.m. Sunday through 1 a.m. Tuesday for areas above 1,000 feet in the northern Oregon Cascade foothills and northern Oregon Cascades, including Government Camp, Detroit and Santiam Pass.

Heavy snowfall is expected, with total accumulations ranging from 5 to 12 inches, except for higher elevations where up to 2 feet of snow is expected above 2,000 feet, according to the Portland office of the National Weather Service. Wind speed could reach up to 50 mph.

The weather service warns of potentially treacherous road conditions and reduced visibility due to areas of blowing snow, with the possibility of down of tree branches posing additional risks to motorists and residents.

In Bend, some rain and snow was expected Sunday night and Monday, with less than an inch of snow accumulation forecasted.
