Every year thousands of Oregonians are disenfranchised from the state’s primary system.
Most Oregonians are registered as not affiliated. It’s 1,095,779 as of this month. And they don’t get to vote in Oregon’s primaries.
One million disenfranchised Oregonians and what are the two major parties doing about it? You don’t seem them pushing for change. The 994,062 registered Democrats and 720,540 registered Republicans get to control the primary system.
Oregon’s system of disenfranchisement is going to continue. All Oregon Votes, a political campaign to undo it, has given up gathering signatures on a ballot measure it aimed to put on the ballot. The Oregon Capital Chronicle reported the group has suspended signature gathering because of a lack of resources.
The big bucks are not attracted by ending disenfranchisement of more than 1 million Oregonians.
Of course, it is relatively easy to switch party affiliation in Oregon just before a primary and switch back again. It does take some hoop jumping. Why should Oregonians have to do that?
