Five Central Oregon boys hoops teams advance to state tournaments

The ball hadn’t even been tipped off before the Summit boys basketball team had a lead over Canby in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs.

Because of a pregame technical foul by Canby for dunking during warmups, Summit took a 1-0 lead before a second had ticked off the clock. Except for a few seconds early in the first quarter, that was as close as the first-round playoff game between 5A’s highest- and lowest-seeded teams would get.

Summit beat Canby 80-54 Friday evening to advance to the Class 5A state tournament at McMinnville’s Linfield University, where it will face off against No. 9 Mountain View for the fourth time this season on Wednesday. It is the third consecutive year that the Storm have made the eight-team tournament.

“We knew what we needed to do, we have been in this position two times before now,” said Summit senior Collin Moore. “I felt like we came in with a focused mindset.”

The Storm used an 18-5 run in the first quarter to build a 30-17 lead and sustained the double-digit lead throughout the game in front of a raucous home crowd at Summit High School.

“We had a great start to the game,” said Summit coach Jon Frazier. “I thought we did a really good job at containing (Canby’s) playmakers and getting consecutive starts. We did a good job pushing the pace and playing at a speed that Canby had a hard time keeping up with.”

Added senior Pearson Carmichael: “These last couple weeks have been our last runs on this court and for the crowd to see us. We have been trying to bring energy every game. Teams are trying to stop us, but the energy and how we play is too fast. It was good to see.”

Four Summit players reached double-figures against the Cougars of the Northwest Oregon Conference. Carmichael led the charge with 27 points and 14 rebounds. Moore finished with 19 points, while seniors Charlie Crowell (12) and Mac Bledsoe (11) eclipsed double-digits in the victory.

“One of the things that makes us unique is that every game we have multiple guys who are fully capable of contributing in different ways,” Frazier said. “Charlie was huge for us tonight. Mac played great for us tonight. Jakob (Hansen) hit shots when he was open. We had multiple guys step in and be stars in their roles.”

The Storm now have at least two games remaining at the state tournament. The past two seasons Summit made it all the way to the state title game (6A in 2022 and 5A in 2023), so the team is pretty familiar with navigating its way through the postseason.

“Everyone is going to turn up a little bit more,” Moore said.

“Preseason everyone is going hard. The difference between preseason and league is it is a step up. Then from league to playoffs, it is another step up. Being in this position before, we know that is the case, so we have to go out and be ready to compete.”
